Welcome to my blog

A journal of the ongoing exploration of painting. Continually trying to push the boundaries of my art practice.  The challenge is to reach the image in my head. Drawing is always my default starting point and then the materiality of the paint takes over to breathe life into the result.

Suffolk Open Studios well under way with preliminary exhibitions at The Quay Theatre, Secret Garden and Framing Centre in Sudbury to publicise our Sudbury Trail on June 8-9. My studio will also be open on June 1-2. But first there's the Sea of Stars exhibition in Aldeburgh. Here's the link....

I drove to Skye via the Lake District and Glen Coe recently. The scenery was mega inspiring wherever I went and now I'm home I just don't know where to start. So many memories fizzing in my head and copious drawings and photos but how to do them all justice? I think they'll have to sit in my mind until I can figure out a way to begin.

Next I have to concentrate on making and sorting work for my exhibition in Aldeburgh at The Garage gallery which I'm sharing with Sarah Bale. We're calling it Sea of Stars. The title seemed to sum up some of our recent work.

Hope to see you all there May 23rd till 29th. Watch Instagram for details.

The first deadline has already been set.....an exhibition at The Minories in Colchester on March 1st.

I've started making new work for this as it will be an exciting new place to show my work. The Minories is a long established gallery opposite Firstsite so a good chance to visit both.

Following on after the construction of the revolutionary architecture of Firstsite, this whole area of Colchester is undergoing a facelift and gradually becoming an much more inviting place to visit with new restaurants springing up.

My second deadline will be self-imposed. I hope to offer a few workshops now that my studio space has increased. It will be so much more comfortable to be able to plan these at home rather than having to transport materials to another site. So I think thes will be more enjoyable and useful. If you are interested and have any special requests for topics you'd like covered, please email me.

I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year.

Having sold my Warraba painting at Art Fair East, I decided to paint the scene again. It is a lovely memory of swimming in the cool river whilst staying in dusty, Manilla, Australia where temperatures reach the low 30 degrees daily. Capturing the fierce sunlight on the water as it filters through the giant trees is difficult. By thinking myself back into the space I try to achieve the feelings of being there. Hope I've come reasonably close but will probably make more attempts at this. Some may find their way into a forthcoming exhibition at The Minories, Colchester in March.
